See Lucy's Q&A’s below
Q1. Did you always want to be a paramedic? I didn't always want to be a paramedic growing up, but I knew I wanted a job helping people and dealing with injuries and illnesses. So being a paramedic fits my interests!
Q2. Why did you decide to become a paramedic? I decided to become a paramedic as it has a great variety of patients, and I could work out in the community.
Q3. Tell us a bit about your career so far? I started my career in an ambulance for 7 years as many paramedics do then moved into primary care by obtaining my Emergency Care Practitioner qualification. I now enjoy doing home visits and clinic work in GP surgeries.
Q4. What do you enjoy about being a paramedic? I enjoy meeting different people every day and never get bored. I enjoy the challenge of different illnesses and working with GPs, nurses, and other paramedics to get my patient the best care.
Q5. At what point, and why did you decide to become a locum? I decided to become a locum just before lockdown and did a lot of locum shifts during the pandemic as I knew that there would be a greater demand for home visits during isolation. I quit my full-time ambulance role last year to become a full-time locum as I enjoyed the work that much!
Q6. What are the benefits of being a locum? The benefits of being a locum are being able to work to your own schedule and working in environments that you enjoy. I have much more freedom and flexibility since becoming a locum!
Q7. How easy is it to manage the admin side of being a locum and organising your own work patterns? Managing the admin side of being a locum has been straightforward so far, as MyMedic makes it easy to see my documents online and I have an accountant to deal with taxes, so I just manage collecting things together and keeping up to date with clinical practice in my own time.
Q8. How has the MyMedic system helped with the process and what impact has it had on you? MyMedics system is very easy to navigate, and I just go online to see if there are any extra shifts and I generally get the shifts I request, so I haven't worried over not getting work due to this. It's very straightforward and reassuring to have everything in one place on the website.
Q9. Do you have any advice for other people out there who may be considering locum work in the health sector? My advice for anyone wanting to become Locum is to just do it. I spent far too long thinking about it and should've made the leap a while ago. You can remain in some employment and locum or full time locum, which is the beauty of it. Life is too short to be tied down to a job that isn't allowing you to live properly and Locuming gives you that back!
